Chocolate Smoothie

A lot of friends ask me about cultivating health and vitality on a vegan diet, and I am happy to share some of my favorite recipes and products with you!

I love making this delicious, nutrient-packed high energy smoothie which I learned about from raw food expert David Woolfe (I’ve adapted his recipe). I enjoy this often for breakfast; it also makes a yummy dessert if you make it with a thick, ice cream-like texture. The raw cacao boosts serotonin levels, so it’s a great replacement for caffeine and a wonderful afternoon pick-me-up when you might be craving coffee and sugar.

INGREDIENTS:

1 C. Unsweetened Almond Milk (I like Blue Diamond Almond Breeze – Unsweetened Original or Vanilla)

2 T. Raw Cacao Powder* (Navitas is a good option)

1 T. Hemp Protein Powder (My favorite brands are Tempt and Navitas – you can find them at Whole Foods and health food stores)

1 pre-sliced and frozen banana

Optional:

1/2 t. Maca Powder

A dash of Vanilla

Chia Seeds**

WHAT YOU DO:

In a blender, mix the unsweetened almond milk (add more or less almond milk to adjust the thickness – I like mine thick and chocolaty!), raw cacao powder, hemp powder, and frozen banana. The frozen banana takes the place of using ice, and gives it a thick and creamy texture.  Pre-slice and freeze it a few hours (or overnight) before using.  I like Tempt and Navitas hemp protein powder because the hemp taste doesn’t dominate the flavor of the smoothie. Blend and enjoy!

HEALTH BENEFITS:

Raw Cacao: #1 antioxidant content food on the planet, high in iron, contains magnesium and chromium (mood stabilizers)

*Raw cacao is different than cocoa – you could use cocoa powder, but you won’t get the health benefits.

Hemp: A complete protein, contains 37% protein, Omega 3 & 6, 10 essential amino acids, high in minerals

Banana: Dietary fiber, vitamin C, potassium and manganese, vitamin B6

Maca: Restores muscular strength, energy and stamina (note: it has a strong flavor, so be moderate in usage)

Chia Seeds: Contain Omega 3, 20-25% protein, 30% fiber, calcium, magnesium, boron, B1, B2, B3, thiamin and antioxidants. Chia seeds also assist with hydration and weight loss. They absorb 10x their weight in water!

**Soak the chia seeds in the almond milk for 15 minutes before blending.

I use a Cusinart personal 32oz blender which comes with 16oz and 8oz travel cups – you can blend right in the travel cups – less to clean up!
